choroid plexus cyst

well we are so thrilled that the internal bleeding threatening the pregnancy has taken care of itself. what a blessing! we were able to go to a 20-week ultrasound this past tuesday to see our baby again (first time in 3 weeks - took forever!!), and it was so nice seeing him! he was being a little bugger and wouldn't let the ultrasound tech take a good look at him. he was munched up in a little potato bug position and was stubborn as ever - not moving for us even after 5 minutes of walking down hallways, jumping, and poking at him. the tech said since he was being so difficult, to come back in a few more weeks so we could get a good look at his vitals - heart, kidneys, etc. seeing as he was not cooperative.

the next morning, we had a routine visit to the OB's office. he asked us if we were aware of "the cyst." no.... what cyst? i thought he was referring to the internal bleeding and that perhaps it had made a comeback, but that was not the case. i guess on the ultrasound they found a big cyst on our baby's brain, called a choroid plexus cyst. it is when there is a mass of fluid in the baby's brain, and can stunt mental and physical development. we're told "not to worry too much" but that they need to check the heart for defects. if the brain and the heart both have problems, then chances are that our baby may have some sort of chromosomal abnormality or mental retardation. don't worry? oh okay - easy. SERIOUSLY?

supposedly only around 5% of babies will manifest something like this in a level-2 ultrasound, but most of the babies' cysts will take care of themselves by 28-30 weeks. if the heart turns out good in the next ultrasound (we're going in on tuesday to high-risk specialists in provo for a body-scan of the baby), then the baby should be fine and have no issues. we're just praying his heart is okay... we are very blessed to have this little baby working so hard to grow and become a part of our family. the last few months after finding out i'm pregnant have been full of a lot of happiness, but i think also some of the hardest faith-testing trials we've ever gone through. it just feels like the health concerns with this little guy just keep coming at us.

we will update with our news after our baby's body-scan on tuesday, in the meantime, thank you for your thoughts and prayers. we appreciate and love you.

I'll be praying for you guys for sure. Mostly that you can just have peace of mind while you are sorting this all out. I've had 2 friends whose babies supposedly had cysts and heart problems who just delivered healthy babies--its true those things generally work themselves out before birth. I'm sure it'll all be fine, but i'm so sorry you have to worry so much in the meantime! :/ good luck :)

I'm so sorry to hear that. It is so easy for them to say not to worry. You are in our prayers. Whatever may happen though, you can handle it, but I hope that all is well in the end.
