...am i supposed to cry?

hi baby.

i went to get that ultrasound this morning, the one the doctor said i needed because we were "measuring big." he thought maybe you had too much amniotic fluid, especially since i stand on my feet doing hair all day and my ankles are always swollen. the doctor also wanted to check the fluid and your size since my blood pressure has been kind of high lately.

the last time we got a look at you was way back in september, when they were checking you for down syndrome because of the cysts on your brain and the holes in your heart. it was nice that we weren't checking on your potential health problems this time. the ultrasound tech said, "we have that you are 32 weeks," even though we both know we are 33 weeks. she put that jelly on your dome and started looking around.

"baby is measuring 33 weeks here in his stomach...does your husband have a big head?" that is what she asked me.

"yes, actually, dad has a huge head. why?"

"ohhh must be from dad, your baby's head is measuring at 37 weeks. that is off the charts."

i must say i was shocked. and i still am. your head is like 2 weeks away from delivery-size. but i guess that makes sense. your daddy has the biggest head i've ever seen (but we don't love him any less). we could also point fingers at your grandpa. he has a huge head too. and he was a monster, 24" long when he was born and didn't fit on the measuring table.

"ok, so based on all his measurements, your baby is measuring 3 weeks early, or 35 weeks. he could come in the middle of january! he already weighs 4 lb. and 15 oz. a 5 lb. baby is really big for right now. wow! looks like you've got a big baby!" the ultrasound tech thought it was kind of funny how big you already are. she thought it was funny that you're already taking after your dad. maybe i would've thought so if it weren't for your feet in my ribs all the time. or the fact that i keep imagining my body ripping in half trying to get your dad's-sized head out of me.

doctor young said that we are supposed to each gain about a half pound a week from now until birth - and that puts you at over 9 lbs. when you are born. i love you so much, but i hope you slow down. i don't want to split in half trying to deliver you - that's another thing - the doctor said you might be too big for me, so i might have to get a c-section. i'm really sad about that.

so all in all, you are once-again confirmed being a big boy. your dad was over 9 1/2 lbs. when he was born. so i shouldn't be surprised. but apparently your head is already in place and your big-boy body is looking to come maybe sooner than we thought. i love you. i hope you get to meet your daddy, he may not have his big head once he comes home.

Doctors love to talk people into thinking they HAVE to have a c-section... they make a LOT more money that way. And it's faster, and they can schedule so they don't miss anything THEY have planned.

My sister-in-law was scared into thinking that her baby was too small and they had to induce her because the baby wasn't ok... turns out it was her biggest, healthiest baby yet.

Just remember, having a baby isn't an exact science. Try and be calm and brave about it. When you're scared, you're tense... when you're tense you body has a hard time doing what it's made to do.

Ask your sweet husband (big head and all ;) ) to give you a blessing, with you sweet Daddy too. You will be ok. You will be MORE than ok, because you're going to be an awesome Mom.

Love you lots. Seriously.

first off- super creepy picture on this post...anyway- i'm so sorry about the big head thing. my little sister had to have a c-section for the same reason and she thought it was the easiest thing to recover from (she may just be telling me that because I'll have to deliver that way for our next baby)..but i've heard lots of ppl say it isnt as bad as everyone makes it out to be..although i'm sure this offers little comfort for you being on teh other side of the experience. by the way- i want to bring you a dinner and come watch him one day so you can sleep:) i know your mom is close..but maybe one day when she can't help out?? let me know! its getting sooo close!!
