because tuesdays are the day jeff and i both have off work, we planned to do something "fun" on the 26th. we decided to hike mt. timpanogos. yes, for those of you who have done this, you're thinking to yourselves that we're idiots. and you're right. i'd hiked it three times previously and jeff only once, but he'd never gone to "the shack" and that's why we planned to go, so he could experience it. everytime i hike timp i tell myself it was the biggest mistake i've ever made and that i'm never putting myself through that much pain again. but sadly, over time, your memory is clouded and you or someone else convinces you to go again. we began our hike around 7 that morning and hiked, hiked, hiked. the first few miles are definitely the worst, because they're the steepest. gluteus to the maximus! we planned to eat our lunches when we got to emerald lake, but we took a little detour, seeing as some of the trail had been messed up due to an avalanche this year. once we got to the lake, we ate, hung out in the shade, and threw the fruit we didn't like (cantaloupe) in the lake for a great letterman-esque game of "will it float?" (p.s. grapes sink. cantaloupe floats, mango floats, kiwi floats, and pineapple sinks partially) and used the water purifier to refill our bottles. after lunch we traversed through the large rock field and made our way to the saddle. at the saddle we enjoyed lunchables and grapes. when we finally got to the shack, we hid from the wind and laid on the ground with our hoodies tied around our faces. COLD! we decided to make the trip down the mountain and took our sweet time, taking plenty of water breaks and eating chocolate-covered raisins. we saw a family of 6 mountain goats that tried to kill us by kicking large rocks down the mountainside toward us because jeff tried to goat-speak to them. our knees were very hurt and we wanted to die, but we made it to the truck that evening. to celebrate the 19.5 miles and over 41,000 steps taken (my phone has a step counter), we got fresh peach shakes and lots of fatty food at taco amigo. we got super sunburnt - so bad, in fact, that i have been peeling like a leper, just in time for engagement pictures this tuesday. we are never doing that hike again.
